Russia's Inga Abitova produced a major upset to storm to European 10,000m gold in Gothenburg on Monday night. Abitova broke clear at the bell and held off the fast-finishing Susanne Wigene to win in 30 minutes 31.42 seconds, a massive personal best.
Her compatriot Lidiya Grigoryeva took bronze with long-time front-runner Lornah Kiplagat of Holland fading fast to finish in fifth.
A sobbing Abitova said afterwards: "It was a fight until the last few metres."
Abitova said that her victory had come as a huge shock to even her.
She said: "I come from a tiny place called Novokuybishevsk, which has maybe 150 inhabitants.
"I want to give a part of this medal to my coach Vladimir Timofeyev, my husband, my sister, my mother and my grandmother.
"We have a three-year-old boy Yegor and he needs a lot of care - they help me so much."
