British athletes labour at Euros
Dwain Chambers

Dwain Chambers and Mark Lewis-Francis reached the semi-finals of the 100m on a difficult first day for British athletes at the European Championships.

Chambers had looked impressive in the first round but struggled in the second, coming through fourth and last qualification place in 10.39 seconds.

Becky Lyne looked a class act in qualifying for the 800m semi-finals but Michael East crashed out of the 1500m.

All three British men failed to make it into the high jump final.

Germaine Mason, Martyn Barnard and Adam Scarr all went out after disappointing performances in qualifying.

The Jamaican-born Mason, who recently switched to compete for Britain, had been an outside hope of a medal.

But he failed three times to clear two metres 23 centimetres, while Barnard failed at 2.26m and Scarr failed to record a height after missing three times at 2.15m.

Lewis-Francis came through his second round race in the 100m in second place, clocking 10.33 behind France's Ronald Pognon.

Lewis-Francis said: "I can tell you about 25 things I did wrong in that race, but you have to stay positive.

Becky Lyne
Lyne looked in good form as she won her 800m heat

"There are little things we're picking up on, but it's coming together slowly. I gave my legs a run-out today - tomorrow I'll be more ready."

But Tyrone Edgar went out after coming home fifth in his heat in 10.51.

Greg Rutherford leapt into the final of the long jump with a fine 8.07m on his first attempt, and will be joined there by Chris Tomlinson and Nathan Morgan.

The 19-year-old Rutherford said: "It felt really easy. I was just taking it easy. That gives me something to build on."

Tim Benjamin cruised into semi-finals of the 400m after winning his heat in 46.10 seconds.

And Tasha Danvers-Smith and Lee McConnell made it into the next round of the 400m hurdles.

There were contrasting fortunes for the British men and women in the middle distance events.

Lyne and Jemma Simpson both qualified comfortably in the 800m, but Amanda Pritchard fell coming round the final bend and must now hope to be reinstated on appeal.

And while Andy Baddeley moved through in the men's 1500m as a fastest loser, East went out after tripping in his heat.

East said: "I'm bitterly disappointed. I felt good and thought I could come through.

"I've worked so hard, and it's come to nothing now."

In the field events, Commonwealth champion Nick Nieland made it through to the final of the javelin competition with 80.40m to finish 11th of the 12 qualifiers.

Carl Myerscough fell 16cm short of the shot put final after finishing 15th in qualification, while Shirley Webb went out in hammer qualifying.
