Emerging British 800m hope Michael Rimmer ran a new personal best of one minute 45.23 seconds at the IAAF Grand Prix in Helsinki, Finland on Wednesday. Rimmer took 24 hundredths of a second off his previous best, finishing third behind South Africa's Commonwealth Games champion Mbulaeni Mulaudzi.
The 20-year-old Liverpudlian is now ranked eighth in the European rankings, just behind compatriot Richard Hill.
Nathan Morgan jumped 7.96m to finish fourth in the long jump.
The 2002 Commonwealth Games champion had the satisfaction of beating Greg Rutherford, who beat him at the recent European trials.
Rutherford, 19, leapt 7.91m in his opening round but opted out of the rest of the competition to avoid the possibility of injury so close to the European Championships, which start on Monday, 7 August.
The other British competitor in action, Wade Bennett-Jackson, was seventh over 100m in a time of 10.64 seconds in a race won easily by Nigeria's Deji Aliu in 10.28.
Ireland's Derval O'Rourke, the world indoor 60m hurdles champion, destroyed her Irish 100m hurdles record with a superb time of 12.85 seconds.
With a helpful following wind, O'Rourke struck 0.07secs from the mark she achieved at the IAAF Super Grand Prix in Lausanne 15 days ago.
