Allen missed the AAA Championships because of injury |
Northern Ireland javelin thrower Michael Allen has been named in the Great Britain squad for next month's European Championships in Gothenburg. Allen earns his first selection for a major championship at senior level after improving his Northern Ireland record by over four metres this season.
"I was not expecting this at the start of the season but as it went on it was realistic I could be going," he said.
"My improvemnet is down to technique and staying free of injury this year."
He added: "I have been able to work constantly all year to really improve and do what I shoul have been doing two to three years ago."
He threw 79.55m at the Northern Ireland Championships on 10 June.
Allen has been selected even though he missed last weekend's AAA Championships because of an ankle injury.
The Ballymoney man will join Commonwealth Champion Nick Nieland in the event.
With James McIlroy out of action at the moment, Allen will be the only Northern Ireland athlete in the British team.
However, Anna Boyle, Paul Brizzel and Paul McKee are likely to be in the Ireland squad for the Championships from 7-13 August.
