Prokopcuka and Tergat clinched thrilling wins in New York last year |
World record holder Paul Tergat and Jelena Prokopcuka will defend their titles at the New York City marathon on 5 November, say race organisers. Tergat won last year's race by less than half a second and said he was back to fitness after a calf injury forced him out of April's London Marathon.
"I was probably in the best shape of my life when I had to pull out of London a few days before the race," he said.
"I now feel 100% ready and I am excited to come back to New York."
Tergat is bidding to become the first repeat champion since fellow Kenyan John Kagwe won in 1997 and 1998.
Last year Tergat beat 2004 winner Hendrick Ramaala in a thrilling finish in New York, and he said he was looking forward to returning to the scene of his win.
"Last year's race will always be one of my greatest memories," said Tergat.
"I look forward to hopefully racing Hendrick again. New York is a difficult course and the weather can also prove to be a challenge."
Prokopcuka held off Kenyan Susan Chepkemei in a close finish to win the women's race last year.
Since then, she has come second at the Boston marathon in April, and won two 10 km road races in Britain.
"I respect my competitors, but I am not afraid of them, because I feel I am strong enough to beat everyone on the New York City marathon course," she said.
