East finished sixth on his European Championships debut in 2002 |
Great Britain's top 1500m runner Michael East will miss next month's European Championships in Gothenburg because of injury. The 28-year-old is suffering with both Achilles and hamstring injuries.
East has raced just once this season and will not make this weekend's European trials in Manchester.
He said: "When I started my season's preparations I was running pretty well, but then the new injury flared up in one of the tendons in my knee."
East was unable to defend his Commonwealth Games title in Melbourne in March but still hopes to run this year.
"Everybody said I would be all right and I only needed to blow away the cobwebs, but I'm having to make decisions about my training from day to day and that's not a good thing," said East.
"I am hoping to compete again this season but, if I do, I must be able to stay focused on racing, rather than worry about the injury."
