Malcolm satisfied with solid runs

Christian Malcolm continued his warm-up for August's European Championships with solid performances in the 100m and 200m in Lucerne.

The Welshman, 27, finished third in his specialist 200m in 20.55 seconds and fourth in the 100m in 10.11.

"I ran two solid races," said Malcolm, who ran a season's best of 20.29 in Malaga last week to climb to the top of the European 200m rankings.

"The 200m is my goal for Gothenburg and this was good preparation."

It was also an encouraging night at the Spitzen Leichtathletik meeting for Britain's Andrew Baddeley in the 1500m.

The 24-year-old, who fell in the Commonwealth final, was a convincing winner in three minutes 40.87 seconds.

Becky Lyne, now Britain's third fastest-ever 800m performer, stepped up to contest the women's 1500m and finished a creditable fourth.

Mozambique's former 800m Olympic gold medallist Maria Mutola had been planning to dip under four minutes but in the end she did not finish the race.

There was also disappointment for British triple jumpers Phillips Idowu and Larry Achike.

Idowu, the Commonwealth champion, slid to eighth with a leap of 16.58m while Achike managed 16.61m to finish sixth.

Andy Turner clocked 13.56 to come home fourth in the 110m hurdles.

Joice Maduaka recorded 11.38 in the women's 100m while Martyn Rooney ran 46.21 over 400m, some way off his season's best of 45.35.

  • It was also an encouraging meet for British athletes at the Aarhus Games in Denmark on Thursday.

Rob Tobin clocked 46.01 to claim the 400m while Jimmy Watkins claimed the 800m in 1:48.30.

Northern Ireland's Michael Allen threw 78.05m to take top spot in the javelin and Liz Fairs won the 400m hurdles in 57.98.

Britain's athletes will be back on track at the European trials in Manchester on the 15 and 16 July.
