Gareth Turnbull faces a two-year ban if found guilty |
The Athletic Association of Ireland has lifted the provisional ban placed on Belfast runner Gareth Turnbull following a positive drugs test. The AAI, which had been instructed to impose the ban by the Irish Sports Council, was worried that proper procedures had not been followed.
Turnbull has now been asked for a written explanation for his 'A' sample result by Wednesday.
He faces a two-year ban if found guilty of a doping offence.
It is possible the ban could be reimposed within a few weeks once the AAI feel that the proper procedures have been followed.
The Irish Sports Council informed Turnbull on Monday that a drug test conducted last September had revealed higher than normal levels of testosterone.
Turnbull has emphatically denied any wrongdoing and a statement from his spokesman vowed that the athlete would do everything to clear his name.
It was subsequently revealed that the testosterone reading in question would not have been an offence two years ago.
