Pavey finished just outside the medals in Gothenburg |
Commonwealth 5,000m silver medallist Jo Pavey will compete in this year's Great North Run in a move which could herald a switch to the marathon. Pavey, fourth at the European Championships, has been eager to pursue a road-running career for some time.
The 32-year-old Exeter Harrier has in the past steered clear of major road races because of injury.
"We're looking forward to seeing how Jo fares," said Matthew Turnbull, the race's elite athletes director.
"She's jumping in at the deep end, but I'm sure she'll do herself justice given her total commitment."
Past women's winners of the world's biggest half-marathon include Paula Radcliffe, Derartu Tulu, Sonia O'Sullivan, Susan Chepkemei and Benita Johnson, all past and present world distance-running champions.
In the men's race, Turnbull has already recruited Olympic and two-time European champion, Italy's Stefano Baldini, and current world title-holder Jaouad Gharib of Morocco.
Past GNR title winners Paul Tergat and Hendrick Ramaala are also returning to the Tyneside venue.
