He took the world record with 17.98m at Salamanca and went into the Worlds as clear favourite.
But even he was not prepared for what was to come.
With his first jump he nailed a huge one. Standing on the running track, he was made to wait and wait for the distance to come up.
When it did - a new world record of 18.16m - he covered his face with his hands in shock before acknowledging the crowd.
It was the first 18m and 60ft jump with a legal wind in history.
Better was to come with his second jump, a wondrous 18.29m.
He ended the year unbeaten in 14 competitions, was voted BBC Sports Personality of the Year and the L'Equipe International Champion of Champions, and received the MBE in the New Year Honours.
