Wales could turn to Christian Malcolm to replace Tim Benjamin in their 4x400m relay team at the Commonwealth Games. On Wednesday Benjamin, who would also have run in the individual 400m in Melbourne, withdrew from the Wales team after losing his fitness battle.
Malcolm is a 200m specialist, but Wales coach Phil Banning has not ruled out using the sprinter in an emergency.
"If Christian is up for it and if all goes well for him, then we might think about it," Banning said.
"We'll have further discussions during the Games - we might just throw him in. It hasn't been discussed but it's something we'll have to wait and see."
Malcolm is already competing in the 100m and 200m individual events in Melbourne in March.
Benjamin was forced out because of a long-standing groin injury that has left him without the necessary time to get race fit.
Although there are four members of the relay team left - Iwan Thomas, Gareth Warbuton, Matt Elias and Rhys Williams - should one get injured there is no reserve.
