Gatlin overcame a stiff head wind to win in Carson |
Olympic 100m champion Justin Gatlin completed an eventful US Championships with victory in the 100m to qualify for the World Championships in Helsinki. Gatlin appeared to have missed his chance when he was disqualified for a false start in Friday's heats, but he was reinstated by the meeting referee.
He ran 10.08 seconds to win the final, beating Shaun Crawford and Leonard Scott, who also qualify for Helsinki.
Maurice Greene will miss out after pulling up injured halfway through.
Greene, the former world record holder, was in contention 30 metres from the line, but pulled up with an obvious left hamstring
injury.
He had to be helped off the track and will not be able to bid for a fourth world 100m title.
Gatlin survived an eventful day of qualification in Carson on Friday, with former 100m world record holder Tim Montgomery and three-time Olympic champion Marion Jones both choosing to withdraw from the competition.
Referee Ed Gorman took the unusual decison to offer him a reprieve after reviewing the race and deeming that Mark Jelks in the next lane may have contributed to the false start.
Ironically Gatlin had spoken of his concerns over changes to the false start rule earlier this season.
Meanwhile Olympic gold medallist Jeremy Wariner clocked the fastest time of the year in the 400m with 44.20 seconds.
His training partner David Williamson finished second in 44.62 and Andrew Rock also qualified for Helsinki with third place in 44.70.
Williamson, who missed out on an individual Olympic berth last year by one-hundredth of a second, said: "I win the other ones. He wins the important ones."
There was another season's best in the women's 400m as Sanya Richards won in 49.28 seconds.
Dee Dee Trotter was second in 49.88 and Monique Henderson third in 49.96.
