Cash boost for Scottish athletes
Lee McConnell will be one of Scotland's leading hopes
Scottish Athletics has received a record amount of funding ahead of next year's Commonwealth Games.

The award of �704,523 is the largest ever made to a sport's governing body and is a combination of Lottery and Scottish Executive funding.

The money will be used to encourage youngsters as well as providing support for Scotland's top athletes to achieve qualification for Melbourne 2006.

Selection nominations for the Scottish team are due in September.

Scotland's Minister for Sport, Patricia Ferguson said: "This is excellent news for athletics in Scotland.

"This record level of funding will enthuse more young people right across the country to see and feel the benefits of taking part in sports.

"It will also provide valuable support for elite athletes to achieve at the very highest levels of international athletics.

"scottishathletics is now on track and moving forward with delivery of its four-year plan.

"I look forward to seeing more opportunities for more people to enjoy the benefits that participation in sports can bring."
