Paul Brizzel failed to make it past the first round in the 200 metres at the European Indoor Championships.

The Ballymena sprinter finished a disappointing third in his heat on Saturday and his time of 21.27 seconds put him in 18th place overall.

Ireland's Paul Hession ran a personal best 20.80 seconds to go through as the second fastest qualifier.

The Irish and AAAs champion was pipped by Britain's Chris Lambert (20.77) in the fourth heat.

However, Hession missed out on a place in the final, clocking 21.03 in the semis.

Ciara Sheehy failed to make it in the women's 200 metres despite her season's best time being faster that heat two winner Angela Morosanu of Romania.

The Dublin City Harrier was third in the much faster third heat in a time of 23.73 seconds.

Derval O'Rourke ran a superb heat in the 60 metres hurdles, breaking her Irish record with a time on 8.02 seconds.

But the Cork woman just missed out in a place in the final after clocking 8.06 in the semis.
