Sweden's Carolina Kluft claimed the first gold medal at the European Indoor Championships in Madrid after a dominant performance in the pentathlon.

The Olympic and world heptathlon champion amassed 4948 points - 30 short of the world indoor record.

Britain's Kelly Sotherton clinched a deserved silver medal after a battling display in the final event, the 800m.

The 28-year-old went one better than her Olympic bronze, setting a new British record in the process.

Sotherton was lying in third place before the 800m but clocked two minutes, 13.58 seconds to finish on 4733 points and push Ukraine's Natalya Dobrynska into third.

Kluft led the event from the opening 60m hurdles but despite the lack of potent competition she still lifted herself to a personal indoor best of 1.91m in the high jump.

Sotherton, matched her pb of 1.81m in the discipline, as well as notching up further lifetime bests of 6.44m in the long jump and 14.22m in the shot.

The Briton could not hide her delight after breaking the British pentathlon record to win silver.

Sotherton's 4733 points beat Julie Hollman's 4392 mark achieved four years ago in Cardiff.

"I have broken the British record and broken my PB by over 500 points so I'm delighted," said Sotherton.

"I didn't want to win another bronze, that would have been a disappointment. Now I'm second best in the world."

The pentathlon replaces the outdoor heptathlon in the indoor competition.

There was more good news for defending 60m champion Jason Gardener as he reached Saturday's final in Madrid.

The world indoor champion was pushed into second by Russian Andrey Yepishin in the first semi-final but still clocked an encouraging time of 6.58 seconds.

In the other semi-final, Mark Lewis-Francis came through to qualify behind French favourite Ronald Pognon, who won in 6.58. But British team-mate Darren Chin pulled up with a hamstring problem.

In the women's event, AAAs indoor champion Jeanette Kwayke missed out on a final spot, finishing back in seventh spot in her semi-final.

Domestic sprint rivals Joice Maduaka and Katherine Endacott had both failed to get beyond the heats.

French favourite for the women's sprint crown, Christine Arron, also crashed out in the second qualifying heat.

The 31-year-old stumbled out of the blocks before pulling up with what appeared to be a hamstring problem.

Things did not go to plan for triple jumper Phillips Idowu whose bid for gold ended in dismal fashion in the qualifying round.

The Briton headed the European rankings going into the Madrid event but could only manage a best of 16.44m, which placed him 11th overall.

There was more disappointment for Britain's medal hopes as Jade Johnson failed to qualify in the long jump.

The 24-year-old could not nail her take off, registering three no-jumps.

Johnson insisted her last effort was legal and Team GB lodged an appeal. But the championship's jury of appeal turned down the claims after studying video evidence.

British gold medal hope Jo Pavey struggled through the first round of the 3,000m, sneaking into the final as a fastest qualifier.

The 31-year-old, who wore road running shoes, was clearly affected by a calf injury as she clocked 9:02.30.

Elsewhere, British stalwart John Mayock set a season's best of 7:54.83 to qualify for the men's race on Saturday.

The 34-year-old was joined in the final by Mo Farah, who was making his senior international track debut for Team GB and Ireland's Alistair Cragg, who holds the fastest time in the world this season.

Northern Ireland's James McIlroy came up against title favourite Antonio Manuel Reina in the first heat of the men's 800m.

The Spaniard overpowered McIlroy on the home straight to win in 1:47.70 but the Briton went through to Saturday's semi-finals.

Welshman Jimmy Watkins misjudged his timing on the tricky indoor track and did not advance.

In the absence of Dame Kelly Holmes, Helen Clitheroe kept British interest alive in the 1500m. The 31-year-old put in a strong run over the final third of the race to qualify for Saturday's final in second spot with an encouraging time of 4:13.99.

Cardiff's James Thie was in impressive form in the men's race as he moved into Sunday's final finishing second in his semi behind Spain's Arturo Casado.

Dale Garland delivered an outstanding performance to reach the final of the 400m. The Guernsey athlete clocked a personal best of 46.89 and after an agonising wait he went through as a fastest qualifier.

In the women's event, Kim Wall also set an indoor personal best of 53.02 but it was not good enough to progress from the heats.

There was also disappointment for Nick Buckfield in the pole vault, who failed to clear 5.60m while Susan Jones missed out on a place in the high jump final after failing to get beyond 1.92m.

Larry Achike also went out of the men's triple jump but Nathan Douglas sneaked into the final as the eighth and last qualifier with 16.57m.

And in the last field action of the day - the prolonged women's pole vault qualification - Janine Whitlock reached Sunday's final after clearing a season's best of 4.40m.

World record holder Yelena Isinbayeva reached 4.50m to advance.
