Tatyana Lebedeva will give 10 per cent of her prize to her old school |
Triple jumper Tatyana Lebedeva claimed the Golden League's $1m jackpot in Berlin on Sunday with victory in the last of the six European meetings. The Russian, 29, took sole possession of the bumper cash prize after emerging as the only unbeaten competitor.
Lebedeva won with a leap of 14.85m, beating Yamile Aldama of Sudan into second place by just three centimetres.
A twice world champion, Lebedeva missed the recent World Championships in Helsinki to focus on the Golden League.
A mother of a three-year-old daughter, she said before the meet she would donate 10 per cent of the prize to her old school in Volgograd.
Lebedeva is the first athlete since 800m runner Maria Mutola in 2003 to win the entire jackpot.
"I feel I am dreaming, only later will I realise that I won a million," she said. "It is a lucky day for me, fortune is smiling on me.
