It was only Turnbull's third race of the summer |
Belfast athlete Gareth Turnbull is still searching for the Commonwealth Games qualifying time after clocking 3:43.24 in Stretford on Tuesday night. Turnbull, chasing the Melbourne 1500m mark of 3:40, was on target after an opening 800m of 1:57 but he lost momentum on the crucial third lap.
"The pick-up just isn't quite there so I'm going to do some training over the next 10 days or so," said Turnbull.
He will have further attempts at the mark before the 18 September deadline.
John Rogers paced Turnbull to 800m but the St Malachy's athlete was then left on his own for the remainder of the race.
"I feel I need to do a few sessions to work on the speed component that is missing at the moment.
"It's something I can work on over the next couple of weeks and I can then come out again and have a couple of more goes at the time."
Turnbull has spent the summer trying to get himself fit again after being unable to train in the winter and spring because of an Achilles injury.
