France's Ladji Doucoure edged out China's Olympic champion Liu Xiang to take gold in the men's 110m hurdles at the World Championships in Helsinki. Doucoure also held off veteran American Allen Johnson, chasing a record fifth world title, to win in 13.08 seconds.
The fast-finishing Xiang took silver from lane two in 13.08, with Johnson having to settle for bronze in 13.10.
"I am so very happy," Doucoure told BBC Sport. "To become world champion for the first time is a great day for me."
Johnson, 34, denied Helsinki would be his swansong on the international stage.
"I hope not," he said. "I gave it all I had today but I just made too many mistakes."
Fellow Americans Dominique Arnold (13.13), Terrence Trammell (13.20) and Joel Brown (13.47) finished outside the medals in fourth, fifth and sixth respectively.
