Sergey Kirdyapkin led home a Russian one-two in the men's 50km walk at the World Championships in Helsinki. The 25-year-old set a gruelling pace to take gold ahead of Aleksey Voyevodin in a personal best time of three hours 38 minutes eight seconds.
Voyevodin, the Olympic bronze medallist, caught Kirdyapkin at the halfway stage but fell away after 40km.
Italian Alex Schwazer burst through from seventh spot after 25km to take the bronze in 3:41.54.
"I am happy but not so emotional yet because the victory is yet to sink in," said Kirdyapkin.
"I have achieved my target for the season."
