Madison leaps to long jump title
America's Tianna Madison shows her delight at winning long jump gold
American teenager Tianna Madison won the women's long jump gold medal at the World Championships on Wednesday.

The 19-year-old US collegiate champion took the lead from Russian Olympic bronze medallist Tatyana Kotova in the penultimate round with a leap of 6.89m.

Kotova took silver with 6.79m while defending champion Eunice Barber of France, who won silver in Sunday's heptathlon, took bronze with 6.76m.

Britain's Kelly Sotherton - fifth in the heptathlon - was eighth with 6.42m.

Sotherton, who had been expected to medal in the multi-event, was delighted with her performance.

I am young and the sky is the only limit for me!

The Isle of Wight athlete said: "I did better than I thought and to make the cut in the long jump was great.

"And to finish in the top eight is great. But the wet conditions were tough. Nobody jumped particularly well.

"It feels like I haven't stopped for days - well I haven't - and now I am just going to sit back and watch my team-mates."

Madison's winning jump was the shortest in the championships history - but it was understandable given the wet and windy conditions.

"I didn't have any pressure coming here so it was easy to focus," she said.

"I felt very confident for the final because I have had both good physical and mental training."

And she promised there was more to come.

"I am young and the sky is the only limit for me!" she added.
