Douglas was one of Britain's best medal hopes |
Nathan Douglas was at a loss to explain his failure to reach the world championship triple jump final after a poor showing in qualifying in Helsinki. Douglas, ranked three in the world this season, had been one of Britain's best hopes for a medal in Finland.
But his top jump of 16.53m was some way off automatic qualification (17m) and his personal best of 17.64m.
"I'm not sure what happened. I felt ready to jump but technically I just wasn't on," he told BBC Sport.
The 22-year-old also denied that pressure was to blame for his under-performance.
"I don't think I was over-pressured. The expectations that people had for me where the same I had for myself," he said.
He also denied he had been affected by Team GB's lack of medal success at the championships so far.
"Obviously the mood in the camp is not the best in the world right now, but I don't think it has brought me down," he added.
Triple jump qualification had been due to take place on Tuesday but was postponed by a day when heavy downpours hit Helsinki late in the afternoon.
When the action did start, Douglas jumped an unconvincing 16.53m with his first attempt.
When he fouled with his second leap, he was lying 12th overall in the two qualification pools.
But Douglas was surpassed by other competitors in the last round and could not exceed his opening effort and ended down in 15th place.
However, he vowed to build on the experience in future, saying: "Hopefully I can learn from this and come back twice as strong."
