Cuba's Zulia Calatayud stormed to victory in the women's world 800m final in a time of one minute 58.82 seconds. Calatayud went to the front on the final bend and surged clear in the home straight with Morocco's Hasna Benhassi scrapping for second in 1:59.42.
Favourite Tatyana Andrianova of Russia held on for third in 1:59.60 after leading briefly at 600m.
Defending champion Maria Mutola, who was seeking her fourth title, finished fourth in 1:59.71.
Reflecting on her hard-earned achievement, a delighted Calatayud said: "For me it was important to win a medal and I did it.
"I grabbed the initiative and took off, moved into first place and kept it until the end.
"I am so happy, I have worked very, very hard for this."
