Williams wins women's sprint gold
Women's 100m champion Lauryn Williams
Williams also won her semi-final
American Lauryn Williams stormed to victory in the women's 100m final in pouring rain in Helsinki.

The 21-year-old Olympic silver medallist started superbly and held her form to win in 10.93 seconds.

Jamaica's Veronica Campbell came through to claim the silver in 10.95 while France's Christine Arron had to settle for bronze in 10.98.

Another favourite, Chandra Sturrup of the Bahamas, was pushed out of the medals into fourth.

Williams was understandably delighted at converting silver from Athens into gold in Helsinki.

"This was the biggest win of my career," said the 21-year-old "The Olympic silver is pretty good, but for me this is better.

"I knew that if I could just maintain my speed I would finish ahead.

"The rain made absolutely no difference for me. There was a hurricane out there but this is just my kind of weather."
