All three of Tikhon's throws in Helsinki went beyond 80m |
Defending champion Ivan Tikhon came back from the brink to retain the men's hammer title in Helsinki. The Olympic silver medallist was on the verge of an early exit after fouling his first two attempts before landing 80.97m to stay in the competition.
The Belarussian bettered that with his next throw, landing 83.89m to secure gold and set a new championship record.
Compatriot Vadim Devyatovskiy took silver with 82.60m and Poland's Szymon Ziolkowski was third with 79.35m.
"While I didn't get into my rhythm early on I knew as the champion I had a psychological advantage over the others," said Tikhon.
"I wanted to break the world record here but I feel I can do it soon."
