Gardener's season best time was not enough to reach the final |
British duo Marlon Devonish and Jason Gardener failed to reach the men's 100m final at the World Championships after they were edged out in the semi-finals. Gardener dug deep to clock a season's best of 10.08 seconds but that was only good enough for fifth in a fast race won by favourite Justin Gatlin in 9.99.
Devonish placed sixth with 10.24 in a much slower semi-final.
"I haven't done myself justice," the 29-year-old told BBC Sport. "It's not good enough, I'm better than that."
The Coventry athlete was some way off his season's best time of 10.19 in a race won by American Leonard Scott in 10.08.
The Olympic 4x100m relay gold medallist, who was selected in the individual event for the first time, now turns his attention to his specialist event, the 200m, which starts on Tuesday.
"I'm looking forward to the 200m and will stamp my mark there," said Devonish.
Great Britain were not represented in the Olympic 100m final for the first time in 28 years at last year's Athens Games.
Mark Lewis-Francis' failure to get beyond the quarter-finals in Helsinki and Gardener and Devonish's exit mean Britain will now not be represented at the Worlds.
