Alekna wins discus on final throw
Lithuania's Virgilijus Alekna
Alekna showed his championship spirit by winning at his last attempt
Lithuania's Virgilijus Alekna successfully defended his world discus title with the very last throw of a thrilling competition in Helsinki.

The Olympic champion was lying in the silver medal position before landing 70.17m to claim gold and set a new championship record in the process.

Estonia's Gerd Kanter, who led after throwing 68.57m at this fourth attempt, had to settle for silver.

Michael Mollenback of Germany wrapped up the medals taking third with 65.95m.

"The Estonian made it difficult for me and put a lot of pressure on me," said Alekna.

"I knew I could throw over 70m here, I have done it so often before. But it so much a psychological thing.

"I still had enough power for my last throw."
