James McIlroy was fourth in the 800 metres at Bangor |
James McIlroy and Gareth Turnbull did their Olympic Games hopes little good by producing disappointing performances at Friday's North Down Games. McIlroy could only finish fourth in the 800 metres and conceded afterwards that he had little chance of making the British team for Athens.
Turnbull finished a distant sixth in the 1500 metres.
It remains to be seen whether he will make one last attempt to get the 'A' standard in Thessalonica on Monday.
Coach John Morrin said he was unsure if Turnbull, who had been hoping to get into the Ireland team, would go.
The meeting was spoiled by windy conditions which particularly affected the sprinters.
Silver medallist
Olympics-bound Paul Brizzel won the 200 metres but his winning time was a slow 21.41 seconds.
Earlier, he had finished fourth in the 100 metres which was won by Olympic silver medallist Frankie Fredericks in 10.35 seconds.
Kenyan Laban Rotich won the 1500 metres in three minutes, 41.24 seconds, from England's Nick McCormick (3.41.87) and Tom Mayo (3.42.85).
Andy Graffin and Michael Skiiner also finished ahead of Turnbull who clocked 3.46.03.
The men's 800 metres was won by Dmitrijs Milkevics of Latvia.
One of McIlroy's rivals for the British 800 metres place, Neil Speight, was second in 1.48.11 while McIlroy's time was 1.48.70.
Eva Massey won the shot putt with a distance of 15.74 metres.
Michael Allen was second in the javelin (71.15 metres) and Olympic high jump champion Sergey Kylugin won his event by clearing 2.20 metres.
