Gareth Turnbull had groin and hip injuries over the winter |
Olympic hopeful Gareth Turnbull starts his summer racing programme on Saturday with a low-key 800m in Boston. Turnbull is aiming to make up for lost time after being injured for much of the winter.
"It should provide me with a chance of a blow-out to knock away some cobwebs and anything around 1.51 will be good," said Turnbull.
Over the following two weekends, Turnbull runs over 1500m in Grand Prix events in California and Oregon.
"Next weekend in Palo Alto hopefully with an 800m under my belt, I can feel comfortable going through in 1:58ish and so anything around 3:42 or 43 would be good.
"Following that I'll be staying out on the west coast to run the Grand Prix meet in Portland, Oregan, on 5 June, which will have a very strong field.
"This will give me the best indication of where I am with my training and what work will need done in the following weeks to have a realistic shot at the Olympic qualifying time."
His personal best of 3:36.60, set last year, is .40 outside the Olympic mark.
James McIlroy is scheduled to run in Solihull on Saturday |
Meanwhile, Dermot Donnelly and James McIlroy are among a group of Northern Ireland athletes competing in Saturday's British Milers Club meeting in Solihull.
McIlroy will compete over 1500m while Donnelly is in action in the 5000m.
Raymond Adams, Richard Girvan, Gareth Hill and Nigel Carlisle will be in action over 800m.
Meanwhile, Sonia O'Sullivan will be among the favourites in the women's race in Sunday's BUPA Great Manchester Run.
The field will also include world 10,000m champion Berhane Adere although Australia's Benita Johnson has pulled out of the event.
Cathal Lombard, who recently smashed the Irish 10,000m record, will be up against Paul Tergat and Craig Mottram in the men's race in Manchester.
Meanwhile, Catherina McKiernan will aim to achieve the Olympic 10,000m standard in Gateshead on 27 June.
With Paula Radcliffe in the field, the race could offer McKiernan a decent chance of bettering the Athens standard of 31:45.00.
