Irish chase 4x400 target
Athletics Ireland hope to organise at least five opportunities for the country's 4x400m squad to qualify for the Olympic Games.

It is intended to send the squad to a meeting in Poland on 5 June, to Zaragoza (8 June) and the Europa Cup in Iceland (19/20 June).

Further opportunities will be available in Dublin on 25 June and the Cork City Sports on 3 July.

The Irish need to be ranked in the world's top 16 come 19 July.

The Top 16 ranking is based on the average of the two best performances in the period Jan 2003 to 19 July 2004.

Irish national 4 x 400m coach Paddy Fay believes it will take two sub-3:03 times in order for the team to qualify.

That will be a tall order given that the Irish record is 3:03.73.
