 O'Sullivan will run in Scotland next weekend |
Sonia O'Sullivan got her summer season off to a perfect start by winning the 5,000m at the Cardinal Invitation meeting in Palo Alto, California. The Irish runner, who is the Olympic silver medallist at the distance, won in a time of 14 minutes 58.43 seconds.
Britain's Justin Chaston won the 3,000m steeplechase, although his 8:24.88 was 0.28secs off Olympic qualifying.
And Kathy Butler missed the Olympic qualifying mark in the 5,000m by 0.63secs, finishing fourth in 31:45.63.
Chaston, whose career has been hit by injury over the last two years, is bidding for his third appearance at the Olympics.
And Mark Rowlands, UK Athletics' coach for the steeplechase, said after his win: "It's fantastic news as it's 10 years since he ran his lifetime best of 8:23.90."
O'Sullivan has been training at altitude in the US in preparation for the Olympics in Athens in August.
The 34-year-old's next competition will come in Scotland next weekend where she will again run over 5,000m.
Alistair Cragg, Cathal Lombard and Marie McMahon-Davenport completed a great night for Ireland by achieving Olympic qualifying standards in the 5,000m and 10,000m.
Cragg was a runaway winner in the 5,000m in 13:16.98 which was a personal best performance and also bettered the Olympic standard by over five seconds.
Lombard also gained the Games 10,000m standard, placing third in 27:33.53 - which bettered Mark Carroll's Irish record by over 13 seconds.
McMahon-Davenport, a veteran of the 1996 Games in Atlanta, finished 2nd in the 10,000m in the Stanford Invitational running a personal best of 31.28.78 behind Sally Barsosio of Kenya.
