Turnbull wins in Germany
Gareth Turnbull ran a new personal best time for the 1500 metres
Gareth Turnbull could win a place in the World Championships

Belfast athlete Gareth Turnbull ran his best-ever 1500 metres on Saturday to give himself a good chance of competing in the World Championships.

Turnbull clocked a personal best time of three minutes 36.6 seconds to win the race at a permit meeting in Cuxhaven, northern Germany.

The time was one and a half seconds better than his previous best and inside the 'B' qualifying time for the Champions to be held in Paris in August.

Turnbull could well now be selected for Paris because if a country does not have an athlete with the 'A' time, someone inside the 'B' mark can be selected.

  • Sonia O'Sullivan finished a disappointing 15th in a 1500 metres race at the IAAF Grand Prix meeting in Madrid on Saturday.
