Johnson achieved a season's best in Madrid |
Ukrainian long jumper Inessa Kravets struck late to rob Commonwealth and European silver medallist Jade Johnson of victory in the IAAF Super Grand Prix in Madrid. Kravets, who holds the world record in the triple jump, waited until the fifth round before producing a winning leap of 6.76m.
Until then Johnson had led with her second round jump of 6.69m, a season's best for the 23-year-old.
Jamaican Elva Golbourne, who pipped Johnson to gold at last year's Commonwealth Games, was third.
No place for Holmes
There was drama in the women's 1500m race when Commonwealth champion Kelly Holmes pulled out with a calf injury after only two laps.
Suzy Favor-Hamilton went on to win in 4:02.89, with British team-mate Jo Pavey second amd Russian Yuliya Kosenkova third.
"I haven't run a reasonable 5000m this year, so now I might have to consider my options," said Pavey, a revelation this current track season.
O'Sullivan and Caines woe
In the mile, Olympic 5,000m silver medallist Sonia O'Sullivan finished a disappointing 15th.
Top British men Daniel Caines and Iwan Thomas were never in contention in the 400m.
Alleyne Francique won in 44.78secs with Caines fourth in 45.51secs and Thomas sixth in 45.78.
In the 1500m, Michael East produced a storming finish to clinch third place in a personal best time of 3:35.49.
