Northern Ireland athletes Conor Sweeney, Anna Boyle and Erin Kinnear will all be involved in European Championship action later this month.

1500 metre runner Sweeney and Ballymena & Antrim sprinter Boyle have been selected on the Irish team for the European U23 Championships in Poland while pole vaulter Kinnear will compete in the European Juniors in Finland.

Boyle and Sweeney sealed their selection for the U23 event in Bydgoszcz by claiming national titles in the age-group in Tullamore on Sunday.

Sweeney edged out Rob Connolly to win the metric mile in 3:47.43 while Boyle took the 200m in a meeting record of 24.07.

Boyle, who has broken the Northern Ireland 100m record on three occasions this season, will compete in the shorter sprint in Poland as well as the 4x100m relay.

World indoor 400m finalist David McCarthy will lead the Irish challenge in Poland.

Sydney Olympians Emily Maher and Martina McCarthy will be asked to prove their fitness before having the selections confirmed.

Impressive Lombard

Sweeney will be joined in the 1500m by exciting young talent Colm Rooney.

Meanwhile, Daniel Caulfield and Cathal Lombard both produced fine performances over the weekend.

Colorado-based 800m man Caulfield ran 1:47.03 just outside the World Championship B standard, when placing fifth at a meeting in Brunswick, Maine.

The run moves him ahead of James Nolan at the top of the 2003 Irish 800m rankings.

At the same meeting, Drogheda's Keith Kelly finished third in the mile in a PB of 4:01.77 while Breeda Willis got the better of Marie Davenport in the women's 3000m, winning 9:02.

Lombard, meanwhile, bettered the World Championship 10,000m B standard when setting a personal best of 28:05.27 when placing fourth at the British Milers Club meeting in Watford.
