Edwards took gold at the 2000 Games in Sydney |
Former world mile record holder Steve Cram expects Britain's Jonathan Edwards to defend his Olympic triple jump title at next year's games in Athens. Speaking at the launch of the Norwich Union Grand Prix meeting at Gateshead on 13 July, Cram said: "I wouldn't be surprised if we are sitting here next year talking about Jonathan going to the Olympics.
"It's only a hop, step and jump away," said Cram.

"I've chatted to Jonathan about this and if the desire is still there and he can avoid injuries he will be in Athens. "He'll tell you himself he has backed off a little and doesn't train at a 100% level all year round.
"If he gets himself into decent shape, he can still compete at a high level.
"The great thing about Jonathan is that there is always a big effort there - something to give him the chance of winning the gold medal."
Edwards refused to be drawn on his Olympic plans but did confirm his involvement at the Gateshead meeting.
"It looks as if the Grand Prix meeting will be my very first of the summer," he said.
"I'm more than happy with how my preparations are going and you have to believe me when I say that I remain as competitive as ever."
