Greene is back on course to defend his world crown |
Maurice Greene returned to form with victory in the USA Track and Field Golden Spike Tour 100m in Los Angeles on Sunday. Greene posted the second fastest time in the world this year, winning in 9.94 seconds - Australia's Patrick Joihnson ran 9.93 on 5 May.
The American, who defends his world title in Paris this August, said: "Everybody was saying I'm done, Im through, I'm finished, I'm washed up, I'm no good.
"But who cares. No matter what the headlines say, you have to go to the line and be ready to run. This is the start of my year."
False starts by other runners and a modest move out of the blocks could not keep Greene from crushing the field.
JJ Johnson placed second in 10.05 seconds, with Shawn Crawford third in 10.10.
The meeting, third stop on the Golden Spike Tour, drew a capacity crowd of 10,094 at the new $150m multi-sport complex in Los Angeles.

Kelli White continued to impress in the women's 100m, where she blasted from the blocks and followed through with a wind-assisted time of 10.79.
Torri Edwards dipped under 11 seconds at 10.96 for second, and LaTasha Jenkins was third in 11.04.
Ana Guevara, cheered on by vocal fans waving Mexican flags, confirmed her status as a 400m world title contender with a time of 49.62.
She finished well ahead of runner-up Tonique Williams of the Bahamas (51.19).
