Darren Campbell has set his targets sky high ahead of August's World Championships in Paris.

The sprinter is looking to become the first Briton to clock both a sub-20-second 200m and a sub-10-second 100m.

And his ultimate goal is to get himself into perfect shape to strike gold at the Olympic Games in Athens in 2004.

"I started my season [at Mexico's Banamex Grand Prix] with 20.5 and 10.24 - my best-ever openers," Campbell told this website while taking time out to film the new BBC series of Superstars in La Manga, Spain.

"And I aim to go sub 10 and sub 20 because I think that would really set me up for Athens.

"If those times mean that I can win gold in Paris then I'll take that too.

"Only John Regis has ever gone sub 20 and no British athlete has ever gone sub 10 and sub 20, so I've got my personal targets.

"Sub 20 could mean gold in Paris - Konstantinos Kenteris is the main man but let's see what he does when somebody goes sub 20 with him."

After enduring a difficult season, Campbell - a former Olympic silver medallist over the 200m - feels back to his best.

"I'm in the best shape of my life and I want to re-establish myself as one of the top sprinters in the world," he said.

"I've had a lot of injuries, but I'm back now and things have gone really well.

"After last year, I took a long look at myself and took the pressure off by realising that I have actually been quite successful in this sport.

"But I need to stop proving things to others. I think I've spent a lot of time doing that and now I'm going to run for Darren Campbell."

Campbell believes that running the shorter sprint is good preparation for his main event, the 200m.

He said: "I think doing the 100 helps me get my legs moving. By the time I get to the 200, everything is clicking technique-wise."

But he has also been working hard on his endurance by running 400m with stable-mate Jamie Baulch.

"I've worked hard and to be honest I think I'm going to deserve everything I'm going to get this year," said Campbell.

"Maybe in other years I haven't had the best preparation with some self-inflicted injuries that have made me look back with regret.

"This season I will not have to and I cannot wait."
