Khannouchi holds the world record |
Pre-race favourite Khalid Khannouchi has pulled out of the Flora London Marathon with tonsillitis. The American world record holder has been suffering from the infection for three weeks and is undergoing treatment at home.
"I'm afraid I won't be strong enough by 13 April," said Khannouchi on Wednesday.
Khannouchi came down with tonsillitis in Japan during preparation for the Kyoto City half marathon, which he won in a time of 62 minutes and 15 seconds.
"Two days after my arrival in Japan on 26 February, I fell ill but the doctors gave me the okay to run the race on 6 March. On my arrival back in New York I got sick again."
Khannouchi won the 2002 London Marathon in a world record of 2:05:38 and was tipped to run that record close this year.
