Freeman eyes Manchester date
Cathy Freeman crosses the line to win the 400m at the Sydney Olympics
Cathy Freeman's coach has Commonwealth concerns
Cathy Freeman could make her first appearance in Europe for almost two years at the Aqua-Pura Commonwealth Trials in Manchester next month.

But Australia's Olympic 400m champion is still struggling with the thigh injury which has hampered her preparations for the Commonwealth Games.

Freeman will avoid a return to full-scale training for another three weeks, her coach Peter Fortune said on Wednesday.

She hopes to be fit enough to compete as a guest over 200m at the trials on 15-16 June, which serve as the main selection vehicle for the English Commonwealth Games team.

The meeting is the first major event to be held in the newly built City of Manchester stadium and will also give Welsh, Scottish and Northern Irish selectors the chance to run the rule over their athletes.

Freeman, who took a break of more than a year after the Sydney Olympics, has only qualified for the 4x400m relay team for the Games in Manchester.

Scans on her thigh have revealed the dual world champion has not fully recovered from a stress injury, an Australian Broadcasting Corporation radio report said.

"We're pushing ahead with a view to still competing in the Commonwealth Games... but it is a concern," Fortune told ABC Radio.

Freeman had planned to train in the United States and compete in Europe in a bid to qualify for the 400m individual event for the Games.
