Merry relishing Freeman challenge
Katharine Merry
Merry is determined to be fit for Manchester
British 400m runner Katharine Merry has insisted that she will be fit for the Commonwealth Games and is looking forward to running against Olympic gold medallist Cathy Freeman.

Merry, who missed last year's World Championships with an achilles injury, was a doubt for the Manchester event after hurting her foot during winter training.

But the Olympic gold medallist says she will be ready for the Commonwealth trials which should secure her a clash with her Australian rival.

Freeman claimed the Olympic gold medal in Sydney two years ago after an epic performance in front of her home crowd, fighting off Merry who finished third.

Freeman though spent most of the following year out of action after choosing to take a rest from the sport, which also saw her miss the World Championships in Edmonton, and Merry believes Freeman will not be at her best in Manchester.

"She's a fantastic athlete," said the 27-year-old Briton.

"Obviously she's a double world-champion and an Olympic champion so we're talking about a lady with very high credentials.

"But at the end of the day nobody is unbeatable and I'm looking forward to racing Cathy."

Freeman missed the Australian Commonwealth trials with a thigh injury, although she was still selected for the national team.

Merry admits her disappointment at missing the World Championships last season will not be erased regardless of the result in Manchester.

The British runner, who lives and trains in Cardiff, was tipped by many to take gold in the 400 metres before injury ended her challenge.

"To be honest I don't think anything could make up for missing the World Championships," said Merry.

"I believe I could have won it especially since no one ran faster than I had.

"To win or to run well here would definitely go some way to thinking that last year was last year and you can't change that. I would go some way to getting rid of the bad luck of last year.

"I'm feeling in good shape just now. I've had slight problems with my feet which have kept me off running for several weeks."
