Edwards reconsiders retirement plans
Jonathan Edwards is the triple jump world record holder and also Olympic and world champion
Jonathan Edwards celebrates winning the world gold
World triple jump record holder Jonathan Edwards is having second thoughts about retiring at the end of this season, and may defend his Olympic crown in 2004.

Edwards hinted late last year that he might retire after this summer's Commonwealth Games.

But now the triple jumper, who turns 36 next month, admits he would like to continue.

"I really don't think I can at this stage express what would be an aspiration," he said.

"But it would be wonderful if I can remain healthy, fit and competitive, and am able to compete at the Olympics in 2004.

His next target will be the Manchester Commonwealth Games
Edwards could be tempted by the Athens games

"No athlete in their right mind would say they didn't want to go.

"It's a fantastic experience to be in the Olympic Games and have the chance of winning a medal.

"Having experienced what it has been like to be an Olympic champion it would be great to do it again."

Edwards is currently in Florida on a warm weather training camp with the Commonwealth Games next on his agenda.

He has won every major championship title, apart from the Commonwealth crown and gold in Manchester in July would mean he joins Linford Christie, Sally Gunnell and Daley Thompson in winning a full set of major titles.

Until this indoor season, Edwards stood head-and-shoulders above his opponents.

But with a 17.80-metre European indoor record, Sweden's Christian Olsson is emerging as a serious threat.

Edwards said: "I have to be brutally honest with myself and see what happens this summer.

"I may find age has caught me up and Christian Olsson might obliterate me and my world record, you just don't know what is going to happen."
