Freeman's new focus
Cathy Freeman
Freeman's hunger for success has returned
Olympics 400m champion Cathy Freeman returned to training on Thursday after a one-year break.

The Australian took time off after winning gold at the 2000 Olympics at Sydney and considered calling time on her career.

But now she says she is back, and hungrier than ever.

I want to be the best in the world again
Cathy Freeman

"At one stage I even wanted a child, I thought I wanted to retire, (but) I absolutely do not want to retire," she told Australian reporters.

The 1997 and 1999 world champion admits she has some work to do to return to her racing weight as she begins preparations for the 2002 Manchester Commonwealth Games.

But the 28-year-old is ready for the challenge.

"I've become more ballsy and I'm really interested to see just how much better I can become," she said.

"My level of ambition has probably heightened. There's less chance of me getting burned out now."

"I feel and look good when I'm fit, I feel more indestructible that way. Ultimately, I want to be the best in the world again.

"I've done it before and I think I can do it again. It won't be easy but that's why I'm doing it."
