 | | Sunday, 7 October, 2001, 16:10 GMT 17:10 UK Ndereba destroys marathon mark  Ndereba took the Chicago title for the second time Kenya's Catherine Ndereba has broken the women's marathon world record by almost a minute. Ndereba won the Chicago Marathon in two hours 18 minutes 47 seconds to shatter the old mark, set just seven days ago by Japan's Naoko Takahashi in Berlin. Takahashi's time made her the first woman to break the magical 2:20 barrier. Ndereba, the defending women's champion, broke away in the 11th mile. Four miles later, she was ahead by nearly a minute.
In the men's race, Ben Kimondiu took a stunning victory, holding off fellow Kenyan Paul Tergat in a final-mile sprint. Kimondiu, a designated pacesetter, was among the leaders for the entire race and went to the front with five miles to go to win in 2:08.52. "I knew Tergat might out-kick me at the finish but I made it," Kimondiu said. "Nobody expected me to win this race. I'm very happy and glad."
