Radcliffe equals world road record
Paula Radcliffe
Radcliffe was no match for Yegorova on Friday
Britain's Paula Radcliffe has equalled the world record for a 5km road race, with victory in the Flora Light Challenge for Women in London's Hyde Park.

Her time of 14 minutes and 57 seconds matched the time set by Scotland's Liz McColgan 10 years ago in Chicago.

The record run comes just 48 hours after Radcliffe had set a new British 5,000 metres record on the track in Berlin.

Running at the head of 20,000 fun runners, she held off the challenge of Kenya's Tegla Loroupe by six seconds.

Early pacemaker Derartu Tulu, Ethiopia's Olympic and world 10,000 metre champion and winner of this year's London Marathon, was a distant third in 15:35.

I'm really delighted to have put together two back-to-back races like this

The International Amateur Athletic Federation does not recognise the distance for world record purposes because of the widely varying conditions in which it is staged.

And it is understood that McColgan's mark was achieved on a downhill course whereas Radcliffe had to contend with a twisty circuit.

Radcliffe said: "Derartu set a really fast pace for the first kilometre of about two minutes 50 seconds. Then she died off, leaving me and Tegla to do battle.

"She pushed it along hard, and as I was tired after Friday night it was hurting. Then she dropped off the pace herself, and I got away.

"I'm really delighted to have put together two back-to-back races like this."
