1963 Winner DOROTHY HYMAN [Athletics] From 1957 to 1963 Hyman was regarded as Britain's best woman sprinter. In this year Dorothy Hyman won Commonwealth gold medals at both 100 yards and 220 yards, and was European champion at 100m.
1964 Winner MARY RAND [Athletics] Mary Rand was the first British woman to win an Olympic athletics gold. In 1964 at the Tokyo Olympics she set a world record of 6.76m in the long jump, won silver in the pentathlon and took bronze in the 4x100m relay.
1965 Winner TOMMY SIMPSON [Cycling] Simpson was the first British cyclist to make his mark on the European professional road scene and became World Champion in this year. Two years later he died on the mountainside from exhaustion during the Tour de France.
1966 Winner BOBBY MOORE [Football] Bobby Moore was England's finest football captain, a sporting legend who led his country to its greatest triumph, the 1966 World Cup victory. The West Ham defender is one of only four footballers to win the award.
1967 Winner HENRY COOPER [Boxing] Heavyweight hopeful Henry Cooper went unbeaten throughout 1967, enhancing his reputation as Britain's most popular boxer. One of the most memorable fights of the year was his defeat of challenger Jack Bodell in June.
