Russia's Marat Safin endures a torrid opening set and makes a series of unforced errors to give Lleyton Hewitt the initiative

Australia's Lleyton Hewitt takes advantage of Safin's errors and works hard to try and win his first Slam on home soil

To the delight of the partisan crowd and Hewitt's followers, including golfer Greg Norman, the Aussie gets the first set 6-1

A concerned looking Safin finally begins to rattle Hewitt in the second set and manages to win it 3-6 to draw level

Hewitt is warned for unsportsmanlike conduct after an outburst at a line judge in a tense start to the third set

Safin is treated by the trainer in the third set for tired legs and struggles to stay in touch as Hewitt races to a 4-1 lead

But the treatment seems to work as in a dramatic turn around Hewitt is broken twice and loses the set 4-6

Safin immediately breaks Hewitt at the start of the fourth set and holds his nerve to win the match 1-6 6-3 6-4 6-4
