Haas reached world number two in 2002 |
Jo-Wilfried Tsonga was the biggest name to fall on a day of upsets at the Gerry Weber Open as he was beaten 6-3 7-6 (7-3) by Germany's Tommy Haas. Haas, 41st in the world, broke once in the first set first and then held his nerve in the second-set tie-break. Fifth seed Tomas Berdych lost to German Mischa Zverev 3-6 6-2 7-6 (10-8). Russia's Dmitry Tursunov also fell victim to home talent as Philipp Kohlschreiber knocked out the event's sixth seed 6-4 7-6 (8-6). Benjamin Becker pulled off another surprise, making up 51 world ranking places to undo fellow German Rainer Schuettler 6-4 2-6 6-4. Earlier in the day Slovakia's Lukas Lacko, who stepped in after an exhausted Roger Federer withdrew, overcame Israel's Harel Levy 7-6 (8-6) 6-2 to book a second-round meeting with Andreas Beck. There are now four Germans through to the quarter-finals where Zverev will play Haas, with world number four Novak Djokovic the highest-ranked player still in contention. "It's great that so many of us are doing well here," said Kohlschreiber. "It's good also for the tournament and the spectators, with Roger Federer not here it means the field is a lot more open."
