Capriati crushed by Conchita
Number one seed Jennifer Capriati loses to Spain's Conchita Martinez 6-0 6-3
Capriati becomes the first big name to exit the event

Top seed Jennifer Capriati crashed out of the Swisscom Challenge in Zurich, beaten 6-0 6-3 by Spain's Conchita Martinez.

The American was hampered by an ankle injury in the second set but was overwhelmed by the veteran Spaniard's cunning play.

Capriati, who received a bye in the first round, had her serve broken three times in the first set as Martinez notched up the first seven games.

I didn't feel anything in the first set, but I felt it at the beginning of the second

The world number three called for the trainer early in the second set and with her ankle heavily strapped finally won a game on her serve.

But in the sixth game the Spaniard broke Capriati once more and soon closed out the match for a surprise victory.

Martinez will play either Jelena Dokic or Alexandra Stevenson in the quarter finals.

Capriati said the injury to her left ankle would not prevent her from playing in the end-of-season WTA Masters event.

"I had problems getting into the match.

"I would have rather had no bye and played in the first round. I would even have preferred to play in the qualifiers."

Second seed Lindsay Davenport fared far better, taking just 50 minutes to sweep past Russia's Tatiana Panova 6-2 6-2.

And Belgium's Justine Henin, the fourth seed, cruised past Anna Smashnova of Israel 6-3 6-1.

The world number 10 now faces Marie-Gaiane Mikaelian, who took another scalp in eighth seed Anastasia Myskina.

After beating Magdalena Maleeva in the first round, the unseeded Swiss player followed up by beating Myskina 0-6 6-4 7-5.
