| Wednesday, 16 October, 2002, 20:35 GMT 21:35 UK Henman: Baby comes first ![]() Henman's Masters Cup place is now in doubt Father-to-be Tim Henman suffered his first-ever defeat to Thailand's Paradorn Srichaphan losing 6-3 3-6 3-6 to crash out of the Madrid Masters Series on Wednesday. The British number one will now face an anxious wait to see if he will qualify for the Masters Cup in two weeks time. As will top seed Tommy Haas, who also slipped out of the competition. Haas retired through blisters against Fabrice Santoro leaving the top half of the draw wide open without its top two seeds. Henman admitted that tennis was not at the forefront of his mind during the game - with wife Lucy due to give birth to their first child any day now.
"I was a little distracted. I think that's inevitable," Henman said. "That's not to make excuses, though, because Paradorn is playing as well as anyone at the moment." The British player said he was pleased with the way his fitness held up after recent problems with a shoulder injury, but added that was not the main reason for his happiness. "The shoulder was the second biggest bonus to come out of today," Henman said. "The biggest is that now I can go home." Carlos Moya's win on Tuesday leaves Henman's qualification for the Masters Cup in Shanghai in serious doubt. Henman needs to be in the top eight to qualify for the event and he is currently joint fifth with Moya. Roger Federer, in seventh place at the start of the week, was quick to capitalise, the Swiss 12th seed overcoming a poor start to see off Chilean Marcelo Rios 6-4 6-2. Fifteenth seed Thomas Johansson had a better day as he beat fellow Swede Magnus Norman 2-6 6-3 6-4. The win was vital as the Australian Open champion needs to overtake French Open winner Albert Costa to claim the eighth qualification spot for Shanghai.
Costa was replaced by lucky loser Jose Acasuso, whose good fortune quickly ran out as Lapentti swept him aside 6-3 6-2. American Andy Roddick, 10th in the Champions Race and seeded 10th here, failed to get the win he needed, losing 6-3 6-4 to the Russian Mikhail Youzhny. Four other seeds exiting on Wednesday were Yevgeny Kafelnikov, Guillermo Canas, Sjeng Schalken and Younes El Aynaoui.. Kafelnikov lost to home hope Alex Corretja 3-6 6-3 6-4, while Canas was beaten 4-6 6-3 6-3 by compatriot David Nalbandian. Schalken was dumped by Croatia's Ivan Ljubicic 7-6 (9-7) 6-4 and El Aynaoui lost 6-7 6-4 6-2 to Feliciano Lopez. Andre Agassi, second in the Champions Race, had far too much for fellow American Jan-Michael Gambill, beating him 6-4 6-4. And Czech number 11 seed Jiri Novak overpowered Spain's Tommy Robredo 6-1 6-1. Meanwhile, former Wimbledon champion Richard Krajicek has withdrawn from the Paris-Bercy Masters Series tournament due to a foot injury. The hard-hitting Dutchman will be replaced by three-time French Open champion Gustavo Kuerten of Brazil. |
