Your plaudits for Adrian Maguire
Adrian McGuire rode over 1,000 winners
Adrian Maguire announces his retirement as a jockey on medical grounds.

Send us your favourite Maguire moments, and wish him well in his retirement.

Maguire has reluctantly taken the decision to retire after initially suffering a neck injury in a fall from Luzcado at Warwick in March.

The Irishman rode over 1,000 winners in an incredible career, and is widely regarded as the greatest jump jockey never to end up as champion jockey.

Maguire's most famous success was his narrow 1992 Tote Cheltenham Gold Cup victory aboard Cool Ground. He also won the King George VI Chase twice, on Barton Bank (1993) and Florida Pearl (2001).

Send us your tributes and memories of Maguire's career.

Adrian, the courage and bravery of jockeys never ceases to amaze me, especially over the jumps. You were braver than most considering the misfortune you had over the years - you always bounced back.

Thanks for all the pleasure you have given to thousands of punters
Robert Dann, England

Like many others, I'll always recall your magic association with VIKING FLAGSHIP. A horse and jockey who epitomised everything that is magical about National Hunt racing. Good luck to you and thanks for the memories.
Declan Burke, Galway, Ireland

Adrian, you were a true genius and a superb horseman whose courage and bravery knew no limits. The sport has lost a true legend, though I hope you remain in racing one way or another. Thanks for all the pleasure you have given to thousands of punters.
Robert Dann, England

I am sorry you had to stop riding because of your past injuries. I though you were great winning the King George on Florida Pearl. Best of luck in the future.
Claudine Kerr, Dublin, Ireland

Dear Aide, jump racing without you will never be the same for me. I saw you as the only jockey that would give you an honest account of yourself when my money was down.

I remember a certain race at Cheltenham, I think it was the Mackeson, you and Dunwoody, I think he was riding Waterloo Boy. It came to the last couple of fences, the race still makes my hair at the back of neck stand up only thinking about it.

As always, you showed a tremendous fearless wonder of how man and horse should attack a fence. Thank you Aide for displaying so much courage, and hope everything works out well for you and your family, God bless you Aide!!
John Hodges, Germany

The combination of Adrian Maguire and Viking Flagship was a thrilling sight
RA, ex-pat in Iceland

Fantastic rider with Will Power of Titanium, sadly it overpowered his frame. But sure the fear in his fellow competitors will soon return to another area of the racing game.
C Reynolds, China

It's a shame that one of the best jockeys I've ever seen had such an injury-plagued career. Deserves to be remembered alongside McCoy, Dunwoody, Scudamore and Francome as one of the true greats.
Steve Bradley, Yorkshire

The combination of Adrian Maguire and Viking Flagship was a thrilling sight - something all the prize money on the Flat couldn't buy. Live long and prosper, Mutley.
RA, ex-pat in Iceland

I was extremely sad to hear you have called it a day, you are the reason I follow NH racing.

My most memorable day was your win on Barton Bank on Boxing Day, I had a 30 pound win on it and it turned out to be my best Xmas for many years. I also have great memories of you and Viking Flagship my favourite ever horse.....

You're going to be much missed, I wish you and your family happiness in the future and I hope you are able to remain in racing in some capacity.
Matthew Williams, UK

Your awe-inspiring rides, bravery, resilience and incredible determination will never be forgotten by the racing world
o Yarborough, England

Great jockey, much too brave, almost reckless but what an inspiration.
Don Constable, UK

Many thanks to an amazing jockey who initiated my passion for horseracing some eight years ago; when I witnessed the concluding part of that epic duel with Dunwoody at Market Rasen.

The memory which particularly stands out for me was when you won the Scottish National and Whitbread in the same season - an incredible feat, made even more so by the fact that you had just returned to the saddle following that shocking fall at Cheltenham.

Your awe-inspiring rides, bravery, resilience and incredible determination will never be forgotten by the racing world - nor that 'Muttley' grin!

Echoing the majority - I sincerely hope that you will not be lost to racing as you embark upon a fresh career path. Wishing you the very best of luck with whatever you choose to do.
Jo Yarborough, England

Adrian IS one of the best NH jockeys who ever rode, not WAS. My memory, only via TV but heart-stopping all the same, was Florida Pearl winning the King George. The BEST piece of confidence-building riding I've ever seen.

Both Adrian and the horse obviously felt like lions that day and isn't that what it's all about? The sheer joy of their win was palpable.

Now Adrian has to quit riding but he has a young family to care for, the gift of the gab and a world of knowledge about his chosen profession to pass on.

I can remember vividly the Barton Bank success in the King George
Victoria Parker, UK

So let's be positive - we will feel his influence for many years to come. Many thanks Adrian for all the thrills, and good luck to you sir!
Jan, England

Adrian, I believe it's called 100%. Dunwoody, McCoy, even Francome - you were the best horseman by a furlong. Take care.
Neil McGinty, Scotland

The 3M's of jump jockeys, Mellor, McCoy and Maguire. Have a great retirement, you won me a good few pennies, as will all top-class riders in their time.
Derek, ex-pat, Brazil

I will never forget the day Cool Ground won the Gold Cup. Watching from the stands I witnessed the best Gold Cup winning ride at the end of one of the greatest finishes ever seen on a racecourse. Good luck for the future Adrian !
Damon Tennant, England

We'll miss you Adrian - I was your biggest fan, and I can remember vividly the Barton Bank success in the King George, the downfall a year later and cheering you on on Moorcroft Boy in the National - your greatest chance of success in the race.

You've held up well through years of injury and although it's sad to see you go, good luck in whatever you next pursue. A great jockey - not an official champion but a real champion in everyone's eyes.
Victoria Parker, UK

He was never champion jockey but a champion in every other aspect of life
Allan Lewis, England

What sad news! You've been my favourite jockey ever since I first noticed your inimitable style as a jump jockey and exceptional horsemanship.

Watching you ride into the last was always exhilarating and you always knew you would give a horse a 110% chance. My greatest memory of you is winning the Martell Cup Chase, beating some really good horses.

I was so pleased when you won the King George last year on Florida Pearl - it was so well deserved (for horse and rider) and once again a brave piece of tactical riding. I wish you well in your future and hope it will still be in racing - but NH races will be so much less exciting without you.
Pam Mills, UK

Adrian was a fantastic jockey and personality in racing and he will be sadly missed in the saddle. Let's hope you start a new career - in racing though!
Sarah Dalton, U.K

It's very sad that we won't see Adrian's brilliant horsemanship on our racecourses any more. He was never champion jockey but a champion in every other aspect of life.
Allan Lewis, England

A very sad day for National Hunt racing
Bill McKibbin, Ireland

Wishing you the very best, the bravest jockey I have ever seen. Hope you are not lost to racing
Tom, Mayo Ireland

A great jockey who has been dogged by bad luck throughout his career. He still battled hard, winning on the great Viking Flagship at Cheltenham and last year on Florida Pearl at Kempton.
Shazir Ayub, England

A very sad day for National Hunt racing on the announcement of your retirement. The two great wins I will never forget was Barton Bank, and Florida Pearl in the 1993/2001 King George. In my opinion you were one of the all-time greats, good luck for the future.
Bill McKibbin, Ireland

Adrian - Best of luck for the future. You have given us great pleasure for a decade and we thank you for that. I hope that you will be able to stay involved with the sport. You certainly deserve the right to enjoy your retirement days.
Gareth, Wales

Without doubt, one of the strongest jockeys in a finish - rated alongside R. Dunwoody and A. McCoy.
Steve, England

I was at Cheltenham when you won on Cool Ground, and it's a day I will never forget. Happy retirement Adrian. You are a credit to your sport and your country.
John, England

One of the finest horsemen of recent years and a credit to his profession
Keith, England

One of the finest, bravest but unluckiest sportsmen we shall ever see. His partnership with trainer David Nicholson is sadly missed.
Dilys, England

Adrian, you were the greatest jockey NEVER to win the title or ride the winner at the National. I sincerely hope you get back into racing in some capacity. Best wishes, Tony, your cousin.
Tony Dunbar, London England

One of the finest horsemen of recent years and a credit to his profession. Enjoy your retirement Adrian.
Keith, England

Adrian, I am very sad to hear of your retirement. You gave the racing public many enjoyable rides, and I hope you find a happy and fulfilling new career - hopefully somewhere in racing. Good luck!
Kim, England

Adrian Maguire - you have given the racing world hours of enjoyment, heartache and memories. I hope this isn't the last we see of you in racing - this is only the beginning of another chapter in your racing career. Enjoy the lay-ins on the weekends!
