Scottish Borders Council are opposing Border Reivers closure |
A director with Edinburgh Rugby has resigned to focus his attention on supporting the campaign to keep a team in the Borders area. Graham Garvie's move follows the Scottish Rugby Union's decision to disband the country's youngest professional team.
Garvie, a Borders councillor who lives in Peebles, will contest the SRU's decision to disband Border Reivers.
Edinburgh's Alex Carruthers thanked Garvie for his services.
In a statement, Carruthers said: "Graham was involved in the formative discussions which led to the establishment of Edinburgh Rugby Ltd and has worked very effectively on external relations for the club.
"We would like to thank him for his contribution and wish him well in this new venture."
The SRU said it was unrealistic to continue running three professional teams in the Magners League.
The governing body said Glasgow Warriors would receive extra funding as a result of the Reivers' closure.
Several Borders players will be transferred to the Warriors for next season but a number have been told to find new clubs as part of the cost-cutting process.
Edinburgh criticised the SRU's decision and voiced their frustration at their lack of involvement in the governing body's review.
